A Message from the Director

As the year draws to a close, I am wishing I could report to you that our building would be added on to and renovated in the spring. That is what we had worked for during the last two years, and what the whole staff and the Board of Trustees have been planning. Right now it looks like that will have to be put on hold temporarily. I think you, the public, have a right to an explanation as to why the plans that we have been telling you about have not yet become a reality.

A number of things are at work right now to force the delay in our plans. The events of September 11 coupled with the slowdown of the economy have meant reduced revenue for all government bodies. The school-funding situation in Ohio, along with the shortfall in state funds, has had a large impact on libraries. Library funding has been frozen for this biennium (July 2001-June 2003)at last year's levels. In addition, funding for OPLIN (the Ohio Public Library Information Network) through whom every library in the state receives Internet service, is now being taken out of the fund formerly reserved for library service. In spite of these obstacles, we continue to be frugal in spending the public money and also continue to put money in our Building and Repair Fund in anticipation of the start of the actual construction.

Also, the legal right of the Louisville Public Library to borrow money to proceed with the building project is dependent on agreement being reached between the Louisville City School Board of Education and the Library Board of Trustees regarding ownership of the library building and the 2 1/2 acres on which the building sits. We are in negotiations and hope to have the matter settled amicably soon.

My wish for the new year is that we come to a speedy solution and can proceed with plans to make the Louisville Public Library an up-to-date facility able to meet the needs of a growing community.

Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.

Betsy Ketchum, Director

Friends of the Library News

Our Friends of the Library group continues to be active and provide support to the library. They are seeking more members. Join today and have fun while supporting your library.

Recently, the Friends joined with the Juilliard Senior Center and the Junior Women's Club to sponsor a program for those wishing to learn how to make a gingerbread house.

The preparation of this newsletter was done by members of the Friends along with help from Juilliard Senior Center workers.

At the Library In-Service Day, the Friends provided a morning snack for the staff.

Thanks, Friends, for all your help and support!

TAB News

TAB Invited to Have Their Say

The Louisville Library Teen Advisory Board has been invited to participate in the voting for the Heartland Award for Excellence in Teen Literature. Nominations are first accepted from teachers and librarians, and then a committee narrows the nominations down to 10 books to be considered for the award. The 10 books that are finalists are then announced, and young adult readers are invited to vote for their favorite book. The teen readers have to commit to reading at least 3 of the nominated books to be eligible to vote for the award. Their votes are then certified by their teacher or librarian and submitted to the Heartland Award Committee. The results of the vote are tallied and announced with the winning author honored at the Lawrence Literature Festival in Lawrence, Kansas. Last year's winner was Laurie Halse Anderson for her novel Speak. Nominations for this year's award include Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, Turnabout by Margaret Peterson Haddix, The Art of Keeping Cool by Janet Taylor Lisle and Night Hoops by Carl Deuker. TAB members are looking forward to reading some of the great books nominated and then waiting to see if their favorite book wins.

Future TAB Meetings

The next Teen Advisory Board meeting will be January 10, 2002 at 6:30 p.m. at the library. New members are always welcome. Contact Mrs. Lang for details.

TAB Sponsors Halloween Story Time

Little Ghosties and Teen Goblins got together Saturday October 27 for an afternoon of Halloween stories, poems and songs. All the performers were members of the Louisville Library Teen Advisory Board. The teens decorated the library reading room with spider webs, clanking skeletons, smiling jack-o-lanterns and bats. They also brought in special treats, and each child attending received a special treat bag. The TAB members would like to thank their parents for all their support and help with the story time. They had as much fun performing as the audience did watching.
